Introducing the new UWC Eswatini National Committee students.

26 April 2020

On the 23rd of March 2020, the UWC Eswatini National Committee interviewed 18 candidates who had been shortlisted for 2020/2021 admission into the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) at one of the 18 UWC schools around the world. From these 18, 8 students were chosen to join the 2020/2021 cohort of UWC Eswatini National Committee.

All 18 students were incredibly gifted and narrowing it down to the 8 students what were chosen was a tough decision to make.

We would like to introduce the 2020/2021 UWC Eswatini National Committee students.

Philiswa Bulunga

Where are you from?

Nhlangano

Which high school did you attend?

Evelyn Baring High School

What do you want to study?

I want to study medicine. And eventually become a neurosurgeon.

Plans after IB?

I'd like to enrol at a tertiary institution and study medicine.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Well. I'm very business minded amongst other things. So while I'm studying I'd like to still be thinking about business ideas. That I'll hopefully breathe life to. And I'll still be studying after 10 years most probably. Because neurosurgery is a super specialisation so it'll take quite some time

Words of advice for people seeking to apply for the scholarship next year?

I'd say. Be yourself because nothing is more powerful than that. Know why you want the scholarship and why giving it to you instead of any other person would right thing to do. And obviously make sure that you get good grades.

Where are you from?

Mbabane

Which high school did you attend?

I'm currently doing Form 5 at St Mark's High School

What do you want to study?

I wanna study Math! And to narrow things down, I'd love to do Algorithms.

Plans after IB?

After IB, I'm hoping I would have made friends with students who have the same interest as me in Math with whom we will do projects for the world.  Then pursue my my studies at a world-best University doing my Algorithms while working on these projects on the side.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

In 10 years, more than anything I see myself happy! Happy because of the fact that I'm content for making the world a better place for our next generation. Or at least initiated the move, in the case where I'll still be working on projects.

Words of advice for people seeking to apply for the scholarship next year?

I'd advice people who want to apply for the scholarship next year to definitely go for it! I think most times we tend to get discouraged when we learn of how many people aren't able to make it then give in to that. Instead they should opt for understanding why they weren't able to and try eliminating those little mistakes when they try. The Application Process is quite an experience, there's a lot of self introspection that goes in, and that's a life time benefit even if it is unsuccessful.

Name

Sisekelo Mkhaliphi.

Where are you from?

Moneni, Manzini.

Which high school did you attend?

Salesian High School.

What made you apply for the UWC Eswatini National Committee scholarship?

Passion to pursue the IB diploma and the love of exploring other idioms of thought. I believe this is very instrumental in influencing communities with incentive.

(Parents can't afford to pay for this diploma, so I saw this amazing opportunity and I went after it.)

What do you want to study?

Artificial intelligence (software engineering)

Plans after IB?

University that offers the AI course. In particular, my dream university to attend is Havard university. Columbia university, Stanford university and the university of Washington/Chicago would be perfect too. Pursue a degree in software engineering. (For the record, any university best with IT and technology is enough to sooth my pursuit)

*Expand my personal aspiration of finally evoking a movement into communities to break the digital divide and teach, mentor, motivate and equip young people aspiring to make a difference. Equip them with the right stuff to ensure a stronger generation with a different, unique and dynamic mindset ready to evoke change in the future leaving the next generation in a country far better than we found it. The young generation today is 100% of the future of the kingdom of Eswatini and emaSwati. Create a network of these across the country starting in and with my community. This network is to be affiliated to other organisations that are there for young people.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

I see myself as an exceptional software engineer working with leading global technological companies such as Google, Apple, Facebook etc. I see myself attaining an AI degree and start pioneering revolutionary machines that would go hand in hand with our augmented reality in the fourth industrial revolution.  I see myself at global industrial sectors that solves global problems and achieving SDGs (specifically with development goals in the technical field)

Philanthropy work in Eswatini communities for helping swazi citizens to attain a global status in terms of technology and operate in the latest industrial revolutions to cope with the fastest growing augmented age in history. Learning from our leading nations, all have something unique that they are good at as a country. Ireland has ICT for example. I believe augmentation in agriculture would be the tipping point for this nation to drastically build a strong economy. My dream is that Eswatini is counted among the MEDCs in the next ten years, I know it sounds like a dream but as Napoleon Hill said, "...but a dream with a deadline come to fruition."

I see myself as a Preacher of the good news of Jesus. Creating a network of non discriminatory preachers across the world for more efficient and easy ways of disseminating global leadership seminars and teachings  that are fruitful without discrimination. The Global Leadership network greatly inspired me to seek to start such a network of my own. My pursuit is to influence traditions, transcend cultures, impact religious ideologies and focus on unity instead of division, and focus on collaboration rather than competition.

Words of advice for people seeking to apply for the scholarship next year?

Interested prospects should remind themselves of who they are. There is so much in them more than they actually know. They should take the courage to explore themselves. They should not to imitate others or try to be the ideal applicant especially during interviews. It's a good thing having a role model but often that steals the only advantage one have. A unique compelling story to tell of the carefully explored self that nobody else can be able to tell.

Another thing is a focused mindset, self discipline, coping with peer pressure and a sound mind. For me UWC started as my dream years ago, it was the passion of my heart. I knew how tight it was to find a way in until I realised that what was in front of me was bigger than the struggle before me. I had to be self driven and thrive for excellency in all that I do from my smallest skill set to my academics and  to my aspirations. Finding a balance with these aspects isn't easy but if you are purpose driven and enthusiastic enough, you'll find a way through. Even if you don't get the scholarship, you'll be glad that you have expanded your terms of perception and openness to the world which both are very rare instrument and commodity in creating massive impact in our generation.

Last but not least, getting your application started as early as possible is very important, this will buy you time to now explore yourself and strengths relative to application form. Be honest and genuine as you pour your heart out to the personal statement. Get your recommendations early to avoid unnecessary fatigue before your big day of entrance tests. On testing, choose subjects you are good at, remember it's all about exploring yourself. Ace the mental alertness test and relax but maintain as you execute in 15 minutes.
